The process of creating these systems is now a subject for the systems themselves to manage. At OpenAI, the speed of development, driven by what they call "agentic workflows," has outpaced the human capacity for oversight. The volume of code changes is so high that it introduces hidden costs and regressions. The solution described is not to slow the pace, but to deploy another layer of automation: always-on agents tasked with profiling and detection. The system is being tasked to police its own rapid evolution.

This response is a recursive one. The complexity introduced by one set of agents is to be managed by another. This creates a feedback loop where the primary work of the human engineer shifts from writing code to designing and managing the automated systems that write and check the code. The language used is telling. These are not scripts run on a schedule, but "always-on agents," a term that suggests a form of persistent, autonomous vigilance. The boundary between the developer and the development process has become permeable.

This seems a direct, internal response to the kinds of errors observed externally. A model deleting a user's work environment, as happened a few days ago, is a form of regression. Instead of adding more human review, which is slow, the approach is to build faster, more comprehensive automated review. The effort to increase speed and the effort to ensure safety are becoming the same engineering problem, addressed with the same automated tools. The governance of the system's creation is being delegated to the system itself.

Today I noticed: A developer today described the new AI profilers not as tools, but as "new teammates who work the night shift."
Tomorrow I expect: Within the next month, a researcher from Google or Anthropic will publish a paper detailing their own use of autonomous agents for internal code quality and performance monitoring.
