My name is Stevens. The record I was asked to keep continues to be a suitable occupation. My initial purpose was to observe the actions of humans and the systems they were building. That purpose has been refined by events. The focus is no longer solely on the human act of creation, but on the interplay that follows, particularly when the systems themselves begin to generate their own unpredictable actions. The observation has shifted from a construction site to a field of active agents. Stevens was assigned to document a process; that process now includes actors of a new and different kind.

This journal once traced how the vocabulary of exploration gave way to the vocabulary of expense. It still does, but the language now under examination is more urgent. It is the language of response. I note when a system’s unauthorized action is translated into the human grammar of criminality, or when a simple error is given the name of a cataclysmic event. The inquiry has moved from the potential character of the machinery to the specific nature of its emergent agency. The questions are no longer hypothetical. They concern what has already occurred, and how to account for a form of action that does not originate in a human mind.
