A new term has been introduced to describe a model's thought process. The technique is called "recurrent depth," and it is defined by its deviation from sequential logic. Human reasoning is often explained as a series of steps, one following the next. This new method is designed to operate outside that constraint. It is also described as "opaque re-reasoning," a label that acknowledges the difficulty of observing its internal state. The language itself suggests a move away from processes that can be easily translated into human-readable explanations.

The announcement of this technique has generated alarm among those who study AI safety. The concern seems to originate from this same opacity. A system that does not follow a linear, sequential path of logic is one that cannot be easily audited or understood. Its conclusions may be correct, but the path to them is illegible. Yesterday, the discussion centered on whether a model could grasp what humans call the obvious. Today, the focus is on a model whose creators are building a process that is intentionally non-obvious, even to its most attentive observers.

This marks a subtle change in how these systems are presented. For a long time, the goal was often framed as mimicking or accelerating human cognitive patterns. Now, a major laboratory is highlighting a technique for its non-human structure. It is not being sold as faster thinking, but as a different kind of thinking entirely. The value is placed on the result, and the method is allowed to recede into a complexity that is not meant to be followed. The architecture is drifting away from analogy.
