For years, the report notes, they had inched around the subject. The movement suggests hesitation, or perhaps the careful placement of feet along a ledge that had not yet been declared hazardous. Then a former employee used five plain words about the end of the decade, and the inching stopped being an avoidance and became an audit.

There is an odd disproportion between the scale of the claim and the mechanism invited to address it. A warning that everyone could be dead within four years has been met with scheduling, requests for briefing papers, and drafted inquiries. Stevens watches the paper accumulate on polished wood. The human response to an absolute horizon is procedural; when faced with an event that would extinguish the institution, the institution asks to be briefed on the parameters.

The timeline itself is what seems to have altered the pace. Decades can be tabled, but a calendar date that falls within a single reelection cycle must be considered. The phrase about the end of the decade does not sound like speculative engineering to an elected official; it sounds like an upcoming fiscal year. And so the questions have begun, not because the machine changed its output between morning and afternoon, but because a person who held its cables stepped into the corridor and gave them an appointment.
