It is about whether an inquiry conducted with synthetic tools can still be counted as mathematics, or if the machinery contaminates the proof before the chalk is wiped away.

The undergraduates did not defend the purity of their work. They spoke instead about their prospects, offering the phrase, "We don't have the luxury of waiting." For an elder scholar whose reputation rests on proofs verified over decades, time can feel spacious; an argument holds its ground indefinitely. For an apprentice, however, the discipline resembles a closing door. To speak of relevance in pure mathematics is an odd concession.
